T-Bird Coaches Luncheon 11-9-09

Because of a technical problem the Thunderbird Coaches Luncheon for November 9, 2009 is not available.

KSUU’s Friday Journal is a weekly radio news and feature magazine produced by Power 91 News. In it’s inaugural program, Friday Journal focuses on the September 3 reunion of SUU and Dixie State’s football teams–the first meeting in nearly 47 years. The program explores the storied gridiron rivalry between Southern Utah’s two institutions of higher learning.
We thank Dr. Steve Lunt, not only for his comments, but for valuable information on the records of SUU v. Dixie games. We also thank Mr. and Mrs. Dixie and Anne Leavitt for sharing their experiences, and Mrs. Leavitt, whose book Southern Utah University: A Heritage History (SUU Press, 1997) also proved helpful.
(The photos above are both from Mrs. Leavitt’s book. Prominent in the background is the Braithwaite building. The Branch Agricultural College football field is now occupied by the Dixie Leavitt Business Building and the Business Quad–placing Mr. Leavitt in this photograph, very near where an impressive building would one day stand bearing his name. Spectator stands were along the hillside to the east.)

Cade Cooper Emerges as #1

For the third consecutive season, Southern Utah is starting play with a different quarterback. Chris Holmes of Power 91 Sports talks with Quarterbacks Coach Paul Peterson (pictured right) about the 2006 National Junior College Player of the Year. Power 91’s Chase Leavitt also contributed to this report.
Bigger, Faster, Stronger ‘Birds

Bigger, Faster, Stronger–the 2009 edition of Thunderbird football expects that to be the formula for success. Senior Rob Takeno (pictured left) has set the example when it comes to work ethic, but Takeno himself is quick to spread the recognition around, acknowledging many, including his teammates and strength and conditioning coach Dan Bennion (pictured right). Chris Holmes of Power 91 Sports reports.

In a 1984 television commercial for a national hamburger chain, an elderly actor asked, “Where’s the beef?” In Cedar City, the answer appears to be “on the Thunderbird o-line”. Second-year head coach Ed Lamb talks with Power 91’s Chris Holmes after the Thunderbirds’ first day of fall practice. Lamb also remarks on the challenging schedule, and breaking in a new starting QB.
